Cervical Spondylosis is a common cause of chronic neck pain. Cervical Spondylosis is a disorder that results from abnormal growth of the bones of the neck and degeneration and mineral deposits in the cushions ( the cartilage or intervertebral disks) between the vertebrae. As the disk dehydrate and shrink, signs of osteoarthritis develop, including bony projections along the edges of bones (bone spurs). Progressive neck pain is a key indication of cervical Spondylosis. It may be the only symptom in many cases. Examination often shows limited ability to bend the head towards the shoulders and limited ability to rotate the head.

In Ayurveda, a condition called Greeva stambh is explained- a condition with cardinal feature of stiffness of neck is explained and it exactly suits with cervical Spondylosis. Greeva means neck and stambh refers to stiffness. It is explained as a vata condition. Increase in vata leads to depletion of body tissues. Sleshaka kapha is responsible for cushioning in between bone joints. When Vata increases, especially with increasing age, the dryness and degeneration caused by Vata leads to decrease of Kapha Dosha. Hence disc generation sets in leading of Spondylosis.

Treatment :
Cervical Spondylosis is a combination of conditions which requires restoring bone density, as well as removing compression over the nerve, if any. In Ayurveda, management is both through internal medication and external therapies, including Panchkarma (especially Greeva Basti). The treatment is mainly oriented to ensure regained strength and movements of the arms and hands, as well as pain reduction. In addition to this Ayurvedic management also focuses on discovering the underlying cause of each patient's condition and providing appropriate corrective measures. We see particularly strong results with patients who have developed the condition through improper posture and habits. For these who have developed the condition such as cervical spine Spondylosis, due to deterioration, health can be restored and maintained while the progress of deterioration is simultaneously arrested through Ayurveda.
According to Ayurveda the vata, the principle of movement is the predominant function with the skeleto-muscular system and the nervous system. Problems relating to these systems are predominantly caused by vitiated vata. The vitiation of vata is caused by two mechanisms. One of them is obstruction of vata due to malfunctioning of kapha and pitta. The other one is increased of vata independently (the degenerative problems). The sacrum is situated in the vata area of the body and this disease is caused by aggravated vata and Ama (toxins), which cause stiffness and reduce mobility of the area. Treatment involves detoxification and elimination of ama and also a vata pacifying diet, lifestyle and herbal preparations.
Greeva Basti:
A perfect Ayurvedic Therapy for Cervical Spondylosis. In this procedure, a compound is created around the back of the neck with black gram paste. Medicated oil (Ksheerabala oil, Ashwagandhadi oil, etc) is heated and is retained within the compound for a few minutes time.
The heated oil helps to improve the space between the two neck bones, leading to relief from the disc derivation. These along with oral medicines help to improve nourishment of disc cartilage and bone, reversing the degeneration process.
